Founded in 1632, the University of Tartu has almost 19 000 students and is famous for research-based education and lively student traditions. Estonia offers a unique perspective on the successful transition to democracy and recent accession to the EU. Tartu is Estonia’s second largest city, with 100 000 people, and is located 2.5 hours from the airport and sea port of Tallinn, with connections to major cities in Europe and Russia. English is spoken widely here, and with students making up one fifth of the population, Tartu is a true University town.
University of Tartu comprises 11 faculties including faculty of Theology, Law, Medicine, Philosophy, Biology and Geography, Physics and Chemistry, Education, Exercise and Sport Sciences, Economics and Business Administration, Mathematics and Computer Science, Social Sciences.
University of Tartu runs a number of applied curricula in six University Colleges. These are Pärnu College, Türi College, Teacher Training College, Narva College, Institute of Law, EuroCollege and Viljandi Culture Academy. Institutes are Institute of Technology, Estonian Marine Institute and Institute of Physics.
University of Tartu comprises six centers of research excellence, of which one is also European Commission Center of Excellence. These units conduct world-renowned research and are closely connected with doctoral studies. The University of Tartu’s most outstanding research areas include Molecular and Cell Biology, Gene Technology, Immunology, Pharmacology, Laser Medicine, Materials Science, Laser Spectroscopy, Biochemistry, Environmental Technology, Speech Technology, Psychology and Semiotics.
More than 60% of the doctoral theses completed in Estonia each year are defended at UT. About 3 300 publications are put out annually by the University’s researchers. The University of Tartu is the only Baltic university member of the Coimbra Group, uniting reputable European research universities of long-standing traditions.
The University of Tartu owns 150 buildings, some of which have the status of historic monuments. Most study buildings and student hostels have been recently constructed or renovated. The University of Tartu has four museums, Botanical Gardens, sports centers, computer labs. The University Library is part of INNOPAC electronic information system.

Tuition free Master´s programme from the University of Tartu
Applied Measurements Science - Master of Science in Engineering: Students admitted in the Autumn 2008 will pay NO TUITION FEE for the whole two year programme. Their studies will be financed through a special project of the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research. No special application for tuition waiver is required. Students only need to submit regular application form and supporting documents. Regular program fee is 4430 EUR/year. In addition, a STIPEND of 255 EUR/month will be granted to several students with the best academic standing upon beginning of their studies.

Other fees

Admission requirements vary by faculty/program. For current information regarding specific program admission requirements, students should check the University website. Typical admission package includes:
• application form;
• certified or notarized copy of the diploma and diploma supplement (transcript) in its original language for previously completed education;
• official certified translation of the diploma and diploma supplement (transcript) into English;
• for non-EU applicants: certified copy and official translation of the high school diploma;
• for students planning to study in English and for whom English is not a native language test of English language proficiency.
