The Budapest University of Technology and Economics is one of the oldest universities in Hungary, founded as Institutum Geometricum in 1782, the first institution in Europe awarding engineering degrees in land survey, river control and road construction. It has developed into the largest institutions of higher education and research centers in Central Europe. Several Nobel Price recipients have been associated with the University: Dennis Gabor (Physics), George Hevesy (Chemistry), Eugene Wigner (Physics) and György Oláh (Chemistry). 750 out of the 14000 students of the University are from 50 countries and more than 600 are studying in the English scheme. Long traditions in education and a philosophy of openness motivated the University to begin its Engineering programs in English in 1984 to students from all over the world. The six traditional engineering faculties of the University´s faculties - Architecture, Chemical, Civil, Mechanical, and Transportation Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Informatics, now have complete study programs in English, while the faculties of Economic and Social Sciences and Natural Sciences offer certain courses in English. This multilingual environment has a strong contribution to the university’s student mobility programs, receiving more than 200 international students from Europe in European schemes, like Socrates, Erasmus and from overseas countries – USA, Japan, Australia etc. – in multi- or bilateral exchanges, for one or two-semester study abroad programs and sending Hungarian students to the partner countries’ universities. The international programs, courses taught in English, French, German and Russian are co-ordinated by the International Education Center.
